Bob Burns No Bananas DAT Driver The D.A.T. 460cc—Of this fifth-generation No Bananas Driver, the people at Bob Burns Golf have begun saying to certain radical slicers, no more than half-jokingly, “You got to have DAT,” where “DAT” means literally the most recent in “Draw Alignment Technology,” but where it might just as well mean “distinctively aerodynamic [and acoustical] trademarks.” Viewed from the side, the DAT’s profile bears a notable resemblance to an airplane’s wing. Though the DAT, with its shallower face (about 1/3rd” shallower than the face of the Classic 460cc) is otherwise forged of Beta Titanium, its elongated convex crown is made of an ultra-light titanium alloy that has allowed us to redistribute weight toward both toe and heel, and to produce a lighter-than-average clubhead (196 grams), all in the interest of optimizing stability at impact and clubhead-speed. Most notable, perhaps, is the DAT’s unusual inside-out sightline, created by three very slightly raised ridges on the crown, each lightly marked in gray, that in turn create two slightly recessed aerodynamic channels curving gradually from front-center of the crown toward the rear of the heel, the effort being to provide the weekend, slicing warrior with both visual and physical aids to an inside-out swing. As if these elements of the DAT’s design aren’t enough, the grounding surface of the sole reinforces the sightline on the crown, as the central surface of the sole likewise curves from front-center toward the rear of the heel—so that when you place the sole of the DAT lightly on a flat surface, the clubface closes naturally, and strikingly, toward a substantial 7°, as if the sole were acting like a broad keel to lead your backswing from inside to out. Bobby Jones Workshop Edition Driver New from the Jesse Ortiz Design Studio, the 460cc Bobby Jones Workshop Edition Driver. This driver featuring a rare Russian BT-23 titanium face, nearly 25% stronger than traditional faces boasts a dynamic triangular shape, which increases gear effect, and allows for maximum correction of off-center hits. Ortiz unique Triangle of Stability design greatly improves upon other square-head designs. Features • Titanium Body Construction • Graphite Composite Crown Construction • Beta Titanium Face • Aldila DVS-55 Graphite • 57 Deg. Lie Angle • 460cc Head Size THE TECHNOLOGY In 2004, Ortiz significantly improved performance in drivers and metal woods by pioneering the industry’s transition to unusual geometric shapes. With his new driver, Ortiz has squelched the form-versus-function debate. The Workshop Edition driver provides the preeminent combination of power and forgiveness while boasting an elegant, exotic look and feel. At 460cc, with a five-inch-by-five-inch USGA maximum dimension, the sleek, bold triangular shape of the club instills confidence and power at address. The club’s triangular shape increases the “gear effect,” which allows for maximum correction of off-center hits and improves upon competing square-head designs. While a square-head driver helps correct extreme heel and toe hits, it does not adequately correct those hit slightly off center. By eliminating the compromised mass in the rear quadrant areas of square designs, Ortiz repositioned this weight deep and directly behind the center of the impact zone, thus creating an effect similar to that of a hammer’s head. The efficiency of the dramatic sweep in the club’s triangular shape is characterized by Ortiz’ trademarked “Triangle of Stability™” (TOS). The club’s TOS limits the use of inefficient mass often found in square-head designs, increasing shot-performance within the critical two-and-a-half-inch diameter zone located horizontally along the clubface. Ortiz explains why the triangular design exceeds square-head options in playability and performance. “I prefer to design a club for maximum forgiveness on 95% of shots, not for the 5% of extremely poor ones,” he said. Milled with elite Russian Beta Titanium (BT-23), the face of Ortiz’ new driver provides a distinctive sound and feel. The elimination of scorelines and the inclusion of Ortiz’ signature nine-inch-by-nine-inch “roll and bulge” create a more rigid face, further reducing shot deflection. The club features weight-reducing graphite composite crowns and toe pieces. Removing weight from these areas allowed Ortiz to relocate the weight into the rear apex, which further maximizes the club’s “gear effect,” improves trajectory and reduces spin rate. Bobby Jones SuperLite Driver – 15 more yardsNo GimmicksJust Physics The Bobby Jones SuperLight Series Driver by Jesse Ortiz takes advantage of recent technological breakthroughs in head, shaft and grip design. The award winning Workshop Edition driver was ahead of its time due to its aerodynamic, triangular shape. The triangular shape enhances the rotation of the head during the swing so that the face squares more easily at impact. This feature is critical to the performance of over-length drivers because in square or traditional shape designs, the face lags open at impact. New, innovative technology from Japans leading shaft manufacturer, Graphite Design, has created a responsive, SuperLight 45 gram shaft, which coupled with Winns new 25 gram litegrip, reduces the total weight of the driver by 45 grams. I then make the shaft length 47 inches which increases club-head speed by nearly 7 mph and distance by 15 yards for most players. The light overall weight allows for greater control, even though the shaft is two inches over standard. A standard driver has a 60 or 65 gram shaft with a 50 gram grip, measures 45 inches and weighs about 320 grams. Bobby Jones Workshop Edition Driver Head At 460cc, with a five-inch-by-five-inch USGA maximum dimension, the sleek, bold triangular shape of the club instills confidence and power at address. Bobby Jones Pelz Series Wedge No other wedge packs this much technology. The Bobby Jones Wedges feature a body cast from a soft stainless steel. A pocket and deep set channels are then milled to accommodate the wear-resistant German alloy Cronidur 30 Face material on the Bobby Jones Wedge. The holes or channels behind the face insert remove substantial weight from the central section of the body and allows the reposition of this weight to the sole for a very low C.G. A classic shape with true cavity-back forgiveness. The Jesse Ortiz Difference The aerospace steel alloy Carpenter 440XH face materialused on the Bobby Jones Pelz Series Wedge is a remarkably wear-resistant metal alloy (often used in industrial bearing assemblies and critical valve components) will maintain both face friction and groove integrity far longer than conventional wedges, thus providing consistently high backspin longevity. With new USGA regulations on the horizon, wedge durability will be more important than ever for maintaining shot trajectory and control. The Carpenter 440XH material on the Bobby Jones Wedges is milled to a USGA-conforming texture of 180 micro-inches, creating a face texture and edge-groove radius perfect for consistent shot making. Many golfers do not realize that backspin longevity is so fleeting that tour professionals replace their wedges often throughout the golf season to keep ball control and shot performance at the highest possible level. "These enduring wedges will help golfers hit better scoring game shots, control their wedge distances to tighter tolerances, and consistently shoot lower scores," said Pelz. Using a proprietary design technique, Bobby Jones Pelz Wedges provide the perfect combination of soft-feeling shots and extremely low face wear to produce a superior-performing wedge, season after season. By applying heat and pressure to a special structural bonding membrane, Ortiz facilitates the release of an epoxy resin, which upon cooling creates a bond between the club’s stainless body and face material that is stronger than welding. Upon curing, the membrane returns to its slightly spongy state, thus creating a soft forged-like feel to each shot. Bobby Jones Hybrid by Jesse Ortiz The Bobby Jones Hybrid designed by Jesse Ortiz is intended to replace the difficult to hit longer irons. Instead of designing hybrid clubs that look like standard irons, Jesse Ortiz philosophy takes advantage of the design of a fairway metal’s low and deeper center of gravity, its wide bodied triangle of stability (TOS), and its versatile contoured sole. Instead of using the homogenous shape of most hybrids with a long, flat leading edge, Jesse Ortiz has created a more traditional shaped hybrid. It is a throw back to the original Cleek or Mashee. The Bobby Jones Hybrids were designed for maximum performance, with the ability to get the ball out of every type of lie, whether it be a divot of fairway bunker. Bobby Jones Hybrids by Jesse Ortiz are also shorter in length, which increases accuracy and makes the Bobby Jones Hybrid a real long iron replacement, not just a fairway metal alternatives. The Bobby Jones Hybrids feature a deep, translucent Jaguar Racing green color, proprietary JS-6 and JS-7 shafts, and classic, heavy knit head covers. The Hybrids Loft Replaces Length 17* 1 1 Iron 40.5" 19* 2 2 Iron 40.25" 21* 3 3 Iron 40.25" 25* 4 4 Iron 39.5" 30* 5 5 Iron 38.75" 35* 6 6 Iron 38" The Bobby Jones Hybrids by Jesse Ortiz Hybrids were the only clubs to receive outstanding marks in the categories of Performance/Playability and Personal Preference in the 2006 Golf Digest Hot List. The Jesse Ortiz Difference Unlike all other hybrids, the Bobby Jones Hybrids feature a well-contoured sole with the heel and toe areas swept away. Jesse Ortiz unique design strategy provides unparalleled versatility from difficult lies. Whether you’re in the deep rough, a fairway trap, in a divot or on hard pan, these long iron replacements will save you strokes and replace your lost confidence in the 175 to 210 yard shot.
